German broadcaster RTL Deutschland has revealed plans to push further into the use of agentic AI across post production, virtual production and AI-generated commercial breaks.
According to the company, it is “strategically developing the use of artificial intelligence in content, building corresponding solutions along the entire value chain”.
This will enable the broadcaster to “set new standards” in the use of AI in streaming and linear television, it said. “The goal is to systematically integrate AI as an effective assistant into key workflows—hand in hand with employees,” added the company.
Plans include using AI to edit previously broadcast episodes of Ulrich Wetzel—Das Strafgericht to change the narrative and deliver alternative verdicts. Each episode will undergo legal review and editorial oversight, said the broadcaster.
An AI tool will be employed to support the post production of the broadcaster’s reality formats. The system analyses audio and video material, transcribes content, identifies relevant scenes, and helps structure storylines.
The broadcaster is also working on pilot projects that are being conducted under real production conditions to explore how AI can make series production more flexible and visually sophisticated. Virtually enhanced backgrounds are already being used in a number of its series.
Stephan Schmitter, CEO of RTL Deutschland: “We are consistently developing RTL Deutschland into the leading AI media company in the German-speaking world. The next step is to firmly embed AI as an intelligent partner for our employees in all processes with the clear goal of sustainably strengthening the quality, innovative strength and creative focus of our teams.”
