Companies collaborate for 4K first in Turkey

Mediapro Turkey, Turksat and Samsung have collaborated to produce the first Ultra HD 4K broadcast to the general public, utilising seven HD cameras to capture the UEFA Europa League A Group Fenerbahçe- Ajax match

Mediapro Turkey, Turksat and Samsung have collaborated to produce the first Ultra HD 4K broadcast to the general public, utilising seven HD cameras to capture the UEFA Europa League A Group Fenerbahçe- Ajax match. The broadcast was transmitted by the EBU to Beinsport, BT Sport and Japanese NHK TV channels, and was also made available in UEFA’s HQ.

The set up and the testing of the operation were completed in three days, and involved seven UHD cameras, four EVS XT3, and a 72 channel video mixer. Twenty-five Spanish team members and 15 local Mediapro Turkey team helped realise the final production.

The match was broadcast to the general public via Turksat with 25MHZ capacity and H265 (HEVC) encryption method was used for encryption of the Ultra HD footage. The Fenerbahçe- Ajax 4K broadcast marked a first in Europe according to Mediapro Turkey, as the signal was sent directly to the satellite instead of being sent via a fibre network, and was made available free-on- air to the viewers without any encryption or subscription requirements. The TRT 4K, Samsung, Turksat and Mediapro Turkey co-operation will continue, with the planned production of a second UEFA match in 2015.

TRT general manager Senol Göka, commented: “As Turkey, we follow the advances in broadcast closely and we do our best to apply them. TRT 4K will finalise its test broadcasting, and will start its normal broadcast streaming in 2016 January. We are already launching the tests of 8K.”
