Danish telco hooks up with TV2 for 4K World Cup channel

National commercial broadcaster will provide 4K UHD coverage for TDC’s YouSee cable arm

The YouSee cable arm of Danish telco TDC has partnered with national commercial broadcaster TV2 to provide 4K UHD coverage of the national team’s first fixture of the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Russia.

The Denmark v Peru match in Saransk on 16th June will be aired in 4K for YouSee cable subscribers via a dedicated 4K channel to highlight the benefits of the technology.

The launch of the new channel follows the rollout of YouSee’s first 4K set-top-boxes in January.

Rights to the World Cup in Denmark are shared between TV2 and public broadcaster DR, meaning that only some matches will be available in 4K. Denmark’s matches with Peru and Australia, on TV2, will be available in 4K while its match against France, on DR, will only be available in HD.

The 4K channel will be available at no extra charge to YouSee subscribers with a 4K box.

Jacob Mortensen, director of TV at YouSee, said that the operator would use the channel to discover the “best quality the World Cup has ever been seen in” and would provide a “taste of the high image quality” that 4K could provide.
