Films at 59 installs PixStor platform

Selected to meet growing 4K workload and prepare for 8K projects

UK post house Films at 59 has installed Pixit Media’s PixStor scalable storage platform to support its 4K high-end grading and finishing work.

Films at 59, which produces 4K programming including Our Planet (Netflix) and Dynasties (BBC One), needed to replace its legacy SAN as it could no longer deliver the required performance or reliability.

The company said it selected PixStore to provide scalability to keep up with the volume of work and a potential shift to 8K finishing.

PixStor was integrated with best-of-breed Dell hardware and Mellanox networking to meet the post house’s requirements. The system currently has six workstations attached to it: two Autodesk Flames, two FilmLight Baselights and two Assist systems.

The platform connects Films at 59’s Avid network, Storage DNA archive system and Object Matrix nearline storage together, and the company is looking to expand the system to meet its growing 4K workload and remain agile with 8K on the horizon.

Stuart Dyer, Films at 59’s operations manager, said: “PixStor’s software-defined architecture provides us with a future-proof platform based on commodity hardware, with performance bandwidth guaranteed for the lifetime of the system with no degradation.”

Pixit Media CEO Ben Leaver added: “With PixStor we’ve gone beyond storage to deliver a workflow-focused infrastructure that empowers our customers to take on demanding Any-K projects, create award-winning work and evolve their business.”
