ARRI has launched a licence-based OpenFX plugin.
Created to enrich digital images with the look and feel of analogue, the ARRI Film Lab plug-in builds on the company’s image processing legacy to simplify creative control of grain, colour, halation and gate weave.
Aiming to emulate the characteristics of traditionally processed footage, the adjustable settings within Film Lab enable grain to be set to the equivalent of a 50D, 200T, or 500T negative stock, and colour settings encompass different print stocks and processes such as reversal and bleach bypass, said the company. Colour and grain intensity can be incrementally adjusted along with halation and gate weave settings which simulate qualities present in film footage.
The tool complements any look developed and used on a project, whether LUTs in prep or colour grades in post, providing consistent results even if material from different cameras is combined.
ARRI Film Lab is compatible with environments including Resolve, Nuke, Baselight and more. With 4K processing of RGB images from ARRI and third-party cameras, LogC3 (AWG3) and LogC4 (AWG4) workflows are supported. It can be used whether the acquisition format was ARRICORE, ARRIRAW, ProRes, or a third-party codec. Support for ACES 2.0 is already being developed.
A forthcoming camera firmware update will make non-destructive previews viewable on set when recording ARRICORE or ARRIRAW with ALEXA 35 Xtreme or ALEXA 35 cameras. In camera simulations of the desired look is achieved via a combination of ARRI Textures and 3D LUTs. No additional hardware is necessary.
A plugin version of ARRI Look Library is bundled with Film Lab, enabling pre-defined looks to be explored, meeting the needs of a wide range of environments and production types.
Available now on a free trial basis, ARRI Film Lab works in real time with all leading post production software and is compatible with RGB images from any camera brought into an ARRI pipeline.
