Google, NBC partner on VR content

NBC says it intends to release some content shot in the new VR180 format

Google has entered into a partnership with US network NBC to produce programming in virtual reality.

The content, which will be available via Google Cardboard, Daydream View or Samsung Gear VR, will be filmed on Google’s VR Jump platform. It will also be available for free on YouTube.

NBC also revealed it plans to release some content shot in the new VR180 format, which provides 4K 3D video.

The agreement covers 10 ‘multi-episode VR productions’ including VR versions of prime NBC content including Saturday Night Live.

“We are constantly looking for opportunities to bring consumers new ways to experience content from across the NBCUniversal portfolio,” said Ron Lamprecht, executive vice president, NBCUniversal Digital Enterprises.

“This partnership combines the creative expertise of NBCUniversal with Google’s VR capabilities to create these engaging experiences. We look forward to working with Google and YouTube on more collaborations like this in the future.”
