RTL Germany launches UHD channel

Linear UHD test channel will be aired by RTL's satellite partner HD+

Germany’s RTL Group has announced the launch of its first Ultra High Definition channel.

RTL UHD is initially launching as a test channel until the end of 2018. It will be carried by RTL’s satellite partner HD+.

The new channel will carry RTL’s coverage of Formula 1 from this weekend, making it the only broadcaster in Germany offering F1 coverage in UHD.

It will also offer the final of Deutschland sucht den Superstar on 5th May, which viewers will be able to watch in HLG HDR if their TV supports the technology.

Andre Prahl, head of program broadcasting Mediengruppe RTL Germany: “For us, UHD will become more important in the years to come, and as a leading media company we aim to set new standards here. We are pleased that with the launch of RTL UHD and the broadcast of Formula 1 and DSDS we can extend our UHD testing.”
