La Liga teams up with Mediapro to provide VAR tech from next season

A centre for VAR’s video operations has been installed in Madrid’s Ciudad del Fútbol de Las Rozas

La Liga will start to use video assistant referee (VAR) in its 2018-2019 season following the selection of Mediapro as the project’s technology partner.

The introduction of the technology into Spanish football is the result of a collaboration between LaLiga, Mediapro and the Royal Spanish Football Federation.

The first steps have been taken to implement the VAR in order to obtain the approval of the International Football Association Board.

Mediapro, chaired by Jaume Roures, is the only Spanish producer certified by FIFA to manage VAR, and is already managing the implementation of the technology in Portugal and Italy. Both Serie A and the Portuguese league are using the video referee this season.

According to La Liga, a centre for VAR’s video operations has been installed in Madrid’s Ciudad del Fútbol de Las Rozas.
