Canon expands cinema camera and lens ranges

Canon has released the smallest camera in its Cinema EOS range alongside its widest Cine-Servo lens

Canon has announced the launch of a new cinema camera and its widest ever Cine-Servo lens.

The latest addition to the Cinema EOS range, the EOS C50 features a 7K full-fame CMOS sensor and DIGIC DV7 processor enabling video, with internal RAW video recording at up to 7K 60P, high frame rate recording at up to 4K 120P / 2K 180P.

As the smallest camera in the range, the EOS C50 is designed for a variety of set-ups from fast-paced shoots to large productions, said the company. The first Cinema EOS camera to offer open gate recording, the entire sensor area is captured for maximum resolution and flexibility. A new Full Frame 3.2 sensor provides a larger image utilising the full image circle of full-frame lenses, allowing horizontal and vertical formats to be edited from the same footage.

Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF II enables high-speed, high-accuracy subject detection and tracking. Precision extends to selecting which eye to prioritise in people, dogs, cats and birds, said the company, with additional controls for tuning autofocus speed and tracking response to suit the subject.

The EOS C50’s modular design is designed to integrate into modern setups, whether using handheld or on a gimbal, mounted horizontally or vertically. Additional features include a detachable handle unit, two full-size 3-pin XLR audio terminals and control dials, plus a REC button and zoom rocker providing camcorder-style control.

EF/PL lenses can be attached via the optional Canon PL-RF Mount Adapter in addition to native support of a wide range of RF lenses. A MIC terminal, Timecode terminal, HDMI OUT (Type-A) and USB (Type-C). Dual card slots for CFexpress and SD cards enable numerous simultaneous recording options, file formats, resolutions and proxy setups.

UVC/UAC support is included for livestreaming at up to 60P/50P via a single USB cable, plus XC Protocol for remote operation of the camera using compatible smartphone applications or hardware accessories such as Canon’s RC-IP1000 Remote Controller.

The company has also announced a range of firmware updates for its existing Cinema EOS range will follow later this year.

Canon’s widest ever Cine-Servo lens

Canon has also unveiled the CN5x11 IAS T R1/P1 with an ultra-wide 11mm focal length and 100-degree angle of view. Designed for confined studio setups and dynamic live events, the lens is available in either RF or PL mount and includes the e-Xs V Digital Drive Unit, offering enhanced control and functionality.

Mark Fensome, Canon Europe’s product marketing specialist, commented, “With the CN5x11 IAS T R1/P1’s diverse capability and balanced build, this super-wide 8K Cine-Servo lens offers exceptional edge-to-edge sharpness and image quality, with mobility for broadcast professionals. Thanks to the built-in 1.5x Extender, this lens is highly versatile – either extending the range when used on a Super 35mm camera or enabling compatibility with Full Frame cameras. It delivers a shallow depth of field that lends a more cinematic look to live production and newsgathering, as well as high-end documentaries and dramas.”
