Canon debuts new portable broadcast lens with 27x optical zoom

Designed to be portable, with the mobility of a conventional Electronic News Gathering (ENG) lens, the CJ27ex7.3B provides 27x zoom ratio, typically only available in 2/3" box lenses

Canon has unveiled its first 2/3” portable lens with the introduction of the new CJ27e×7.3B next-gen broadcast lens.

Classified by Canon as a UHDxs lens, the company’s highest image quality rating for broadcast optics, the lens spans a focal range of 7.3mm to 197mm. With a built-in 2x extender, the lens’ maximum telephoto reach increases to 394mm, said the company.

Designed to be portable, with the mobility of a conventional Electronic News Gathering (ENG) lens, the CJ27ex7.3B provides 27x zoom ratio, typically only available in 2/3″ box lenses.

It also features Canon’s next-generation drive unit, the e-Xs V, with angled 20-pin connector, built-in USB-C connector, updated display menu and Focus Breathing.

Compensation, a feature for ENG lens which helps minimise image distortion when racking focus, and Automatic Restoration of Illumination Attenuation (ARIA)ii technology is supported to help minimise the effects of f-drop/ramping as the lens zooms, said Canon.

Brian Mahar, senior vice president and general manager, Canon USA, Inc. said: “The new lens we are introducing will result in strikingly sharp video footage for audiences watching news, entertainment, sports and more.”
