The Qantas Australian Grand Prix, the first official race of the Formula 1 2012 season (16-18 March, 2012), was transmitted to Eurovision by the Dutch satellite uplink company Multi-link Holland and the Adtec Digital EN-91 MPEG 4 High Definition Ultra Low Delay Encoder. Multi-Link Holland is responsible for all Formula 1 EBU (European Broadcasting Union) transmissions. The EN-91 supports high definition and standard definition MPEG 4 AVC/H.264 video with 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 Chroma sampling, boasting up to eight pairs of audio, We pass, TimeCode, Captions, Teletex, AFD and more as standard features. Multi-link Holland CEO and Founder, Bob Snieder, described the broadcast as “Perfect!” adding, “We didn’t have any issues with the ADTEC EN-91 or RD60 [IRD]. Buying ADTEC was the best move we could have made.” Paired with the RD60 Integrated Receiver/Decoder, the EN-91 can deliver HD-SDI with end-to-end delays of only three frames and with no dedicated fibre link needed like Motion JPEG.
