Netflix’s ad-supported tier may stop users from downloading content

An independent developer has reportedly found code that informs users they can not download content on the streamer's forthcoming advertising plan

Netflix is reportedly planning to stop users who sign up for its forthcoming advertising-supported platform from downloading content, which is available on the SVoD version.

According to a report by Bloomberg, an independent developer found code buried within the streamer’s iPhone app, enabling a user text message that says, “Downloads available on all plans except Netflix with ads.”

The code also indicated that subscribers who sign up for the new ad-supported tier will not be able to skip commercial breaks in the content they’re watching.

Netflix wouldn’t confirm either feature for its ad-supported tier.

The streamer is expected to launch its new advertising tier in early 2023. The company recently named Microsoft as the technology partner for the ad-supported offering.
