Italian production company goes live with 5G

Videe trialled the technology across a wide range of demanding productions, including sailing, football matches and reality TV

Italian broadcast production company Videe has successfully trialled 5G for live production.

Videe has adopted six Sony 5G kits built around the NXL-ME80 media edge processor, CBK-RPU7 remote production unit, and PDT-FP1 portable data transmitter.

The company trialled the technology across a wide range of demanding productions, including sailing, football matches and reality TV. During the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin at the end of November, it provided both camera and connectivity in the same infrastructure.

Tests were also conducted during Marcialonga, a 70km international classic cross-country ski marathon. Videe deployed an additional camera to cover the finish line and celebration areas, enabling it to assess the impact of snow on 5G transmission and the effect of bandwidth on the throughput. The results confirmed the system’s ability to adapt to different production scenarios and broader adoption of the technology, said Sony.

“These tests have allowed the company to validate the system under high-movement, dynamic, and bandwidth-intensive conditions,“ said Gino Campagna, R&D coordinator at Videe. “This paves the way for a broad portfolio of services and future developments, enabled by a fast, reliable, and dedicated infrastructure, in an IP world.”

“We are proud to stand alongside such an innovative company and to have enabled the testing of advanced 5G systems,” said Norbert Paquet, strategic marketing manager, Sony Professional Europe. “At Sony, we are continuously focused on developing innovative technologies that optimise the efficiency of production processes enhancing the service quality—an objective that 5G is fully capable of supporting. This initiative is part of a broader journey that includes a growing number of successful 5G trials already carried out.”
