Bitmovin’s HDR and AV1 technology powers MUBI’s global platform

Bitmovin’s cloud VoD encoding infrastructure replaces MUBI’s legacy on-prem stack

Bitmovin has announced an agreement with MUBI to provide cloud-based VoD encoding for its global film streaming platform, supporting 3-pass encoding, UHD and multi-codec strategy (AVC, HEVC and AV1) for film-grade quality optimisation.

The collaboration replaces MUBI’s on-premises encoding stack, aiming to ensure scalability and fast turnaround time to drive the company’s content catalogue.

Rapid integration and full migration to the managed cloud encoding service were accomplished ahead of the hard deadline when legacy infrastructure was decommissioned, with no disruption to catalogue delivery, said Bitmovin.

Andy Dust, CTO, MUBI, said, “Every film we deliver deserves the highest possible quality. We needed an encoding partner who could match our ambitions, not just for today’s catalogue, but for where we’re taking our platform. Bitmovin’s HDR and AV1 expertise, fast response times and collaborative approach made the decision straightforward. We’re excited to build our next chapter of premium content delivery together.”

Ian Baglow, co-CEO, Bitmovin, added: “With its carefully curated catalogue of film content, MUBI brings quality cinema to film lovers globally. Bitmovin’s VoD encoder delivers outstanding quality of experience as well as multi-codec streaming support, so is well positioned to support MUBI in this endeavour.”
