Armoured 5big gets capacity boost

The new 5big features Seagate’s 8TB Enterprise Capacity hard drives, Thunderbolt 2 technology and hardware RAID, delivering speeds of up to 1050MB/s and 40TB of storage.

Seagate brand LaCie said the 5big boasts a 20 per cent capacity increase. Designed to operate 24×7, the Enterprise Class HDDs can support 8,760 hours of operation per year. They offer 256 MB cache, 7200 RPM, and RAID environment optimisation.

The device features two Thunderbolt 2 ports, for daisy chaining up to six Thunderbolt devices to a computer via a single cable (included). Thunderbolt 2 is also backward compatible, using the same cables and connectors as first-generation Thunderbolt. As a result of Thunderbolt 2 technology, the LaCie 5big can deliver sustained speeds of up to 1050MB/s.

The LaCie 5big offers a range of RAID modes. Its hardware RAID delivers sustained performance, better flexibility and the ability to connect the product to another computer while keeping the RAID configuration. RAID modes 5 and 6 provide complete data protection against disk failure, while providing high speed and capacity.

The LaCie 5big’s cooling system consists of three components, a heat-dissipating aluminium casing, a Noctua cooling fan, and jumbo heat exhausts. The Noctua NF-P12 fan pulls heat away from the internal components while producing very little noise. Additionally, the seamless aluminium cast of the case acts as ‘armour’ to protect internal components.

Available this quarter, the LaCie 5big comes with a five-year warranty that covers drives, enclosure, and spare parts.
