Mediapro’s Barcelona facility hosts first European film shot entirely in virtual production

Mediapro's virtual production team worked with the film's art directors to develop 41 stages harnessing technology such as AI, Unreal Engine, photogrammetry and 360º sets, said the company

Grup Mediapro’s Barcelona-based virtual production facility has been used for Parenostre, the first European film to be shot entirely using the technology.

The project was shot over four weeks at the production centre in Barcelona, which combines both green screen and LED technology in virtual filming. This allows the technique to be adapted to needs on both the artistic and production sides, said Mediapro.

Mediapro’s virtual production team worked with the film’s art directors to develop 41 stages harnessing technology such as AI, Unreal Engine, photogrammetry and 360º sets, said the company.

The 3D stages used were processed and projected on LED in real-time, allowing the technical and directing crews to make last-minute changes during filming.

“With conventional shoots, post production carries a lot of weight, while with virtual production the emphasis is on pre-production,” said Isaac Bergadà, head of the virtual production at Grup Mediapro.

“The flexibility and control of this type of filming allows us to save a lot of money in post production.”
