Facebook ‘is preparing to launch smart TV device’

Expected to launch in time for 'the holiday season'

Facebook is preparing to launch its new streaming TV device in the next few months, according to a report.

Variety claims the new device will launch in time for the “holiday season.” It will be part of Facebook’s Portal family of devices, featuring a camera, and combining video chatting with TV viewing and augmented reality.

Reports Facebook was planning to launch its own streaming TV device first appeared in August.

It’s thought the device, which is expected to sit on top of a TV set, will run on Android, and will have more of a focus on content consumption that Facebook’s other Portal products.

The report suggests the device could be the first of its kind to bring AR effects such as face filters and interactive stories to the TV screen.

Facebook hasn’t responded to the report.
