Korean director Park Chan-wook shoots short film entirely on iPhone

Among the features used by the production were iPhone's Cinematic mode, macro video, Night Mode, Ultra Wide camera, Telephoto camera, optical image stabilisation and ProRes video recording

Apple has released a short film shot by Oldboy director Park Chan-wook that was shot entirely on an iPhone 13 Pro.

The 20-minute film, titled Life Is But A Dream, combines martial arts with romance, dark comedy and musical storytelling.

The director has used an iPhone for filming before, in 2011, he shot a short film, Night Fishing, on an iPhone 4, which went on to win the Golden Bear for short film at the Berlin Film Festival.

Park said while he was writing the film, he had no specific camera in mind, and “it’s amazing” that he could shoot his project on an iPhone.

“The speed in which the focus shifts and where the focus is placed are all closely related to what we’re trying to tell with the scene,” added the film’s DoP Kim-Woo Hyung.

Park added that he found the iPhone camera to be comparable to any professional camera. “It’s amazing that you can now carry around something so powerful in your pocket,” he added.

Among the features used by the production were iPhone’s Cinematic mode, macro video, Night Mode, Ultra Wide camera, Telephoto camera, optical image stabilisation and ProRes video recording.
