Apple TV has announced it will present a live Major League Soccer (MLS) match captured entirely on iPhone 17 Pro. The match between LA Galaxy and Houston Dynamo FC will mark the first time iPhone will be used to capture a major professional live sports broadcast.
Cameras positioned around the venue will capture live footage, including pitch warmups, player introductions, in-net goal angles and match play, throughout the event, with the coverage streamed live on Apple TV on Saturday 23 May, the final weekend of MLS play.
Footage captured on iPhone was first incorporated into a live broadcast workflow in September 2025, with select moments of the baseball game between the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers used during Friday Night Baseball. Following positive fan feedback, Apple extended the use of iPhone across sports broadcasts. This Saturday’s game marks the “next leap forward” said the company.
The iPhone 17 Pro features three 48MP fusion cameras, which provide the equivalent of eight lenses. Its compact form factor enables dynamic perspectives, aiming to enhance viewer experiences during the broadcast, which comes ahead of the forthcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 tournament.
