Hotspring unveils Slapshot ML-driven rotoscoping solution

Hotspring said the breakthrough had been achieved through the acceleration of machine learning technology

Hotspring has announced the launch of its new machine learning (ML) powered work in progress rotoscoping tool, Slapshot.

The VFX network said Slapshot was built in-house and is available as a free add-on to its Hotspring platform. The solution allows users to quickly create rotoscoping works in progress (WIP) of anything, at any resolution for live VFX pipelines, aiming to speed up creative collaboration.

Adding that the solution is unique in the industry, Hotspring said the breakthrough had been achieved through the acceleration of ML technology, unlocking earlier opportunities for tests, comps and presentations across TV, feature film, commercials, music video and direct-to-brand projects.

“This isn’t the first attempt to solve this problem,” said Jon Mason, CEO and co-founder of Hotspring. “People have come at it from the tech side and dabbled in it from the VFX side, but no one has been able to bridge the gap between what the technology can do and what live VFX pipelines demand. Our expertise in software combined with in-depth knowledge of rotoscoping meant that we found ourselves in a unique position to create something of real value to our clients and industry.”
