Approval granted for new Derby studio facility

The plans will repurpose the former Aida Bliss ironworks into a centre to train the next generation of filmmakers

Derby City Council has approved plans for a new film studio and stunt academy.

Under the proposals, the former Aida Bliss factory site will undergo a three-phase redevelopment to convert the derelict building into a facility with performance studios and immersive set areas for filming, acting and stunt work.

Led by Derby producer and stunt coordinator Damien Walters, whose credits include Captain America: The First Avenger and Kingsman: The Secret Service, the plans include a cafe and gym and aim to repurpose the historic former ironworks to provide training for the next generation of filmmakers and stunt performers.

In a statement on LinkedIn, Lee Smith, MD at Sigma Architects, said, “This project is incredibly exciting and transformative for Derby and the Chester Green area. It’s not just about revitalising a forgotten site—the City Road Academy will create future stars on both sides of the camera, train Olympians, foster film and media creativity, and position Derby as a global hub for innovative industries. We’re thrilled to lead this first major phase in evolving our city into a powerhouse for film and performance arts.”
