British broadcasters in talks for new joint streaming app

New app would also enable the broadcasters to have a presence on the homescreen of Smart TVs

The BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 are reportedly in talks to join forces on a single free streaming app that will aggregate live broadcasts and catch-up programming in one place.

According to the Sunday Telegraph, the discussions are being hosted by Freeview with the aim to make it easier for viewers to find the content they want without having to navigate numerous different OTT services.

The paper suggests it would also enable the broadcasters to have a presence on the homescreen of smart TVs, alongside the likes of Netflix, Apple, Disney Plus and Amazon.

Viewers would be able to use a single sign-in, with the broadcasters “pooling” the audience data to improve recommendations.
