Formula 1 connectivity partner revs up for the move to 8K

Tata Communications' Dhaval Ponda has revealed work is underway for the move to the higher resolution

Tata Communications, Formula 1’s official broadcast connectivity partner, is reportedly preparing to move to 8K.

In an interview with Autosport.com, Dhaval Ponda, vice president and global head media and entertainment business at Tata Communications, revealed work is underway for the move to the higher resolution.

“I think that the transition to 8K is going on actually quite well in the industry,” said Ponda. “And it will definitely happen because, for the current generation that has got used to 4K, for them 8K will really offer a finer detail and a higher level of quality.”

According to Ponda, any sport looking to move to 8K would need to meet three stages, including underlying digital infrastructure in place, he said.

It will also need to work with technology partners to deliver an 8K ecosystem. The third part, Ponda admits, is that the cost of 8K screens and TVs needs to come down.
