England’s World Cup opener breaks BBC streaming records

However, in terms of linear viewing a bigger audience tuned into ITV's coverage of Wales's draw against the United States

England’s Qatar 2022 match against Iran on Monday 21st November was streamed a record 8 million times on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport online, making it the largest live streamed event on the BBC over a 24 hour period.

The match also saw a peak TV audience of 8.1 million and over 70 per cent of the share of available viewers, said the BBC.

However, in terms of the linear TV audience, more viewers tuned into Wales’s draw against the USA on ITV with it reaching a peak audience of 9.4 million according to BARB. According to ITV, a total of 10 million viewers watched the match across both linear and streaming, with a peak of 13 million.

During the FIFA World Cup the BBC is offering “most of” the matches it holds the rights to in UHD on iPlayer, as well making alternative commentary available.
