Trade association UHD Spain has brought together the participants of a proof of concept trial of UHD-HDR broadcasting and next-generation audio (NGA), using 5G contribution, cloud mixing, 5G Broadcast, and the public internet for signal transport, to discuss the outcome.
The trial, which took place last October, involved a live concert by the singer Israel Fernández, held at the Real Observatorio Astronómico de Madrid.
The UHD workflow delivered HDR-HLG from the camera via 5G, the cloud, DTT (DVB-T2), satellite (DVB-S2), and the internet (OTT, HbbTV) simultaneously. Viewers could watch the concert on TV, PC, tablets and mobile devices through the official UHD Spain website.
At an event held in Madrid, all of the companies involved in the trial discussed their findings.
“We wanted to see the possibility of combining the acronyms UHD and 5G because we wanted to see how far we could go to make an end-to-end workflow,” explained Miguel Ángel Cristóbal, general manager at SAPEC.
This test was “one of the first experiences in the world that has mixed all these technologies, from the camera to the television or any support in which to display it,” he added.
Carlos Chaparro, from TVU Networks, spoke to the audience about the contribution and input of all those involved in the project. “Cloud production is already there. It is not the future, it is the present,” he said. “It allows us to reduce costs, although we have to learn key aspects. We have it here and we have demonstrated it.”
UHD Spain has released the below video about the proof-of-concept.
