Vodafone, Sky Deutschland try out 5G multiview app

App provides five additional camera perspectives in HD, allowing Sky customers in the stadium to switch between angles, analyse controversial decisions and replay key moments they missed when not in their seats

Vodafone Germany and Sky Deutschland have reported a successful test for a new 5G multiview app designed to enhance the in-stadium experience for Sky customers.

The Sky 5G Multiview App was tested at the Bundesliga match between RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund at the Red Bull Arena, where spectators were able to see exclusive content and different camera angles on their smartphones via the Vodafone 5G network.

Built by Smart Mobile Labs on behalf of Sky, the app provides five additional camera perspectives in HD, allowing Sky customers in the stadium to switch between angles, analyse controversial decisions and replay key moments they missed when not in their seats.

Vodafone’s 5G turbo network enables bandwidths of up to 10 gigabits per second, ensuring the live images are in sync with the game, with latency below 10 milliseconds.

“We marry emotions in the stadium with information from the digital world,” said Vodafone CEO Hannes Ametsreiter. “Our 5G turbo and on-site data processing in the stadium bring camera perspectives that stadium visitors would otherwise only see on TV in the evening, directly on the smartphones. Lovers of detail in the stands can see the game-defining scenes from every angle and never miss a goal.”
