IPTV was the fastest-growing pay-TV platform of 2018 according to new research by Kagan.
Cable TV is expected to remain the largest multichannel platform in the next five years, but subscribers are projected to decline at 0.3 per cent CAGR (compound annual growth rate) due to migration to IPTV in Asia Pacific and Western Europe.
IPTV’s projected CAGR is seven per cent over the next five years, while overall multichannel subscribers worldwide are expected to grow at 2.4 per cent CAGR.
Kagan added that global multichannel household growth will continue to decelerate, with the integration of OTT and catch-up TV services posing the biggest threat to traditional multichannel TV.
Additionally, the global multichannel economy generated $230.06 billion in video service revenues in 2018. This is expected to increase to $245.41 billion by 2023.
