Mediaset has increased its stake in German rival ProSiebenSat.1 and could look to raise it further according to reports.
On Monday, the Italian broadcaster announced its Spanish unit Mediaset Espana had bought a further 5.5 per cent stake in ProSiebenSat.1, to 15.1 per cent. That makes Mediaset ProSieben’s largest investor.
Reuters now suggests Mediaset could be looking to go further, and is considering raising its stake to just below 20 per cent.
In a statement about Monday’s acquisition, Mediaset said: “The transaction confirms Mediaset’s commitment to invest in the future of free TV development in Europe and to unlock growth potential in Germany, Europe’s largest media market,”
It’s thought Mediaset is looking to persuade its German rival to start talks on a possible tie-up.
