German regulator gives Mediaset go-ahead to raise stake in ProSieben

German Cartel Office says it has "no competition concerns"

Germany’s Federal Cartel Office has given Mediaset the greenlight to increase its stake in the ProSiebenSat.1 Group.

A spokesman for the regulator said it had “no competition concerns” about the Italian company’s plan to acquire a competitively significant stake in the German broadcaster.

Currently, Mediaset owns 20 per cent of ProSieben, but it’s thought to want to increase that stake to 25 per cent. The ruling will also allow Mediaset to vote at the German company’s annual general meeting in May.

Mediaset is currently seeking allies in its ongoing battle with Vivendi over a planned pan-European TV service it wants to create to take on the might of the US streaming platforms.
