Mediapro launches court action against Canal Plus over football rights

Spanish broadcaster has accused Canal Plus of "abusive and unfair practises".

Mediapro has reportedly begun legal proceedings against Canal Plus, accusing the French broadcaster of “abuse of its dominant position” in the on-going fight over rights to French football as well as “abusive and unfair practises”.

According to L’Equipe, the proceedings have been launched in the Paris commercial court.

Earlier this week, TVBEurope reported how Canal Plus is planning to bid for the rights to France’s Ligue 1 if negotiations between current holder Mediapro and the French football league (LFP) fail.

Mediapro failed to make its payment of €172 million to the LFP in October, and the two organisations have been locked in talks ever since. Mediapro have been in a mediation process in the Nanterre Commercial Court to try and reach agreement on both the October payment and its next payment scheduled for 5th December.
