Movistar Plus+ upgrades 20 channels to software-defined playout

The new environment is based on Grass Valley Playout X running on 13 AMPP servers, with two Framelight X servers providing media management

Grass Valley has announced Telefónica Servicios Audiovisuales (TSA) has selected its AMPP solution, with Movistar Plus+ migrating the first 20 linear channels to the software-based platform.

Aiming to update its playout infrastructure, the new environment is based on Grass Valley Playout X running on 13 AMPP servers, with two Framelight X servers providing media management. Full redundancy provides main and backup operation across the channels, said the company.

The AMPP architecture enables playout to operate as software services across shared infrastructure, eliminating the need to tie each channel to a dedicated chain and allowing resources to be deployed as required.

Using SMPTE ST 2022-2 inputs and outputs, Playout X handles channel playout and Framelight X supports asset management. The platform enables the management of operations, monitoring and engineering, aiming to minimise dependence on fixed hardware.

José Luis García Cabrera, COO, TSA, commented, “This project represents a significant change in how we approach playout, moving from dedicated hardware that has served the platform for many years to a more flexible software-defined environment. The first 20 channels are now operating on the new platform, giving us practical experience of the new approach as we consider the best way forward for the remaining channels.”

The transition was handled within a tight timeframe, with Movistar Plus+ continuing to operate existing services throughout, as well as managing integration with third-party systems, graphics and traffic.

Carlos Ferreira, VP sales Southern and Central Europe at Grass Valley, said, “Moving an established playout operation of this scale onto a software-defined platform requires a clear migration path as well as confidence in the technology. AMPP gives TSA the flexibility to introduce the new environment progressively, while Playout X and Framelight X provide the playout and media management capabilities needed as its requirements develop.”
