Banijay considering ITV takeover?

The French Media group is 'working on plans' for a possible bid, according to reports

The French media group has been linked with a possible takeover of ITV or its studio arm.

According to a report in the Financial Times over the weekend, Banijay Group is exploring the possibility of an offer and has held “early talks” with the broadcaster.

Citing a source said to be close to the situation, the FT reported Banijay is considering a range of options which include a takeover of ITV’s studio business or a full takeover of the group, which would likely require additional third party investment.

The ITV share price has risen by a tenth this year, valuing the group at around £3 billion, although analysts have suggested the studio business itself, which has attracted interest from investment groups such as All3Media’s owner RedBird IMI and others, could be worth that amount on its own.

ITV’s largest shareholder, Liberty Global, is said to be supportive of the management considering options for the business.

The FT said combining Banijay and ITV Studios would make “strategic sense” and lead to increased negotiating power.

Discussions are reportedly at a “very early stage” with no guarantee a deal will follow. Neither party has commented on the situation.
