Audio-Technica launches two new broadcast mics

Featuring mid side (MS) capsule configuration, both mics enable a wide range of stereo image options for professional broadcast applications and more

Audio-Technica has unveiled two new stereo broadcast microphones. Designed to meet the needs of professional broadcast, production and field recording use cases, the mid-side (MS) mics provide a wide range of stereo image options.

Featuring both a 5″ gooseneck with clip-on mount and a low-profile boundary housing, the BP350ST-UB can be configured to enable inconspicuous capture of true stereo sound. Enclosed within the same body as Audio-Technica’s ATM350a instrument mic, the BP350ST-UB is compatible with its mountings. A snap-on grille enables easy access to the mic while the back of the plate is magentised and contains four mounting holes. The AT8491UC clip-on mount includes a ¼” camera thread for use with a tripod or other device.

The BP350ST-UL is a compact stereo shotgun mic, configured to mount to video cameras or support rigs for ENG and other on-the-move applications. Its cardioid element is mounted on a 16 cm (6.3″) interference tube that rejects off-axis noise to focus on distant sounds. The included AT8495 mount clip secures the mic to the power module, providing adjustable, modular placement around other peripherals.

Both mics give users a wide range of stereo image options with the mid-side capsule arrangement, making them ideal for professional broadcast, production and field recording applications, added Audio-Technica.

Both feature MS capsule configuration designed to provide clear, well-balanced response, even at high SPLs, said the company. The format aims to simplify placing voices naturally into a mix and minimises common problems with stereo miking, such as time alignment and comb filtering. The included AT8547 power module allows users to switch between left-right stereo output (wide or narrow) and discrete mid-side signals for later manipulation.

A selectable 80 Hz high-pass filter is included on the power module to suppress low-frequency noise and a 36 cm (14.2″) TA5F to dual-XLR3-M stereo cable enables connection to a camera’s XLR inputs or to any traditional mic preamplifier with phantom power.
