Italy’s RAI to launch 8K next year

Will be the first European broadcaster to launch 8K content

Italian broadcaster RAI has announced it intends to launch 8K broadcasts in 2020, making the broadcaster the first in Europe to launch the technology.

The company said it is aiming to launch its 8K content in time for next year’s Olympic Games in Japan, which begin in July.

RAI’s director of technology Luigi Rocchi made the announcement whilst speaking at a conference in Rome, where he showed new RAI productions which will be available in both 4K and 8K.

RAI already has a 4K Ultra HD channel which broadcasts special events including documentaries, football and the Christmas Mass in the Vatican.
