Helmut Thoma, who was the head of RTL Deutschland from 1984 to 1998, has predicted a bleak future for streaming platforms.
In an interview with Deutsche Presse-Agentur, Thoma said: “Providers like Netflix are likely to fail. In the end, these whole series are always the same thing, the audience will be bored at some point.”
According to Thoma, while the future looks bleak for streamers, traditional linear TV faces a brighter future, so long as broadcasters embrace new technologies: “Virtual reality, for example, will open up completely new dimensions,” he predicted.
“Where should innovations come from? There are only three players in the public sector, ProSiebenSat.1 and RTL, who hardly compete with each other.”
