ARTE plans UHD switchover

Expected to cease satellite broadcasting in SD quality

Franco-German broadcaster ARTE is expected to launch a UHD channel in 2021.

ARTE reportedly plans to cease satellite broadcasting in SD quality, though it is unclear whether a separate ARTE UHD channel will be switched to satellite when the transmitter’s SD signals are switched off in 2021.

The news comes from the KEF commission into broadcast funding, which is seeking to end SD broadcasting this year.

The channel has previously tested the UHD format, not on its own satellite channel but via its UHD1 channel, including a Europe-wide broadcast of the ballet Le Corsaire in April 2016.
