Korean public broadcaster MBC (Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation) has contracted Snell & Wilcox to provide IQ Modular products that will facilitate an expansion of the network’s HD broadcasting capabilities. MBC is currently using Snell & Wilcox IQ Modular equipment to broadcast digital services to eight cities across the country.

The broadcaster plans to expand these services to a further 10 cities in the new year, using IQ Modular HD upconverters, downconverters and switchers within its digital infrastructure.

As part of the installation, MBC will also use IQUDC, an advanced universal up-, down-, and crossconversion module, which is claimed to provide a level of HD conversion more familiar with 2-RU box-type converters. Moreover, it not only upconverts SD signals but also works as a synchroniser or downconverter for HD signals. This enables local stations working in multiformat networks to achieve the correct output format from any input type.
