FilmLight updates Baselight to include machine learning tools

Colourists can copy corrections and enhancements made in Face Track to the entire timeline

As part of the latest iteration of its grading software Baselight, FilmLight has introduced a number of new tools including an improved and modernised timeline, a new primary grading tool, X Grade, a unique new look development tool, Chromogen, plus a brand new machine learning (ML) based tool, Face Track.

Using an underlying ML model, which has been developed by the company internally, Face Track finds and tracks faces in a scene, adjusting as each face moves and turns.

It attaches a polygon mesh to each face, which allows perspective-aware tools such as Paint and Shapes to distort with the mesh, said FilmLight. Colourists can copy corrections and enhancements made in Face Track to the entire timeline.

By developing a framework, which it calls Flexi, FilmLight said it is now in a position to integrate future ML-based tools into Baselight quickly and easily.

Other additions to Baselight 6.0 include a RIFE ML-based retimer, a reworked Curve Grade, integrated alpha for easy compositing, and a new sophisticated Gallery for improved searching

Further enhancements include Sharpen Luma, a built-in Lens Flaretool, Bokeh for out-of-focus camera effects, Loupe magnifying for fast and accurate adjustments, and an upgraded Hue Angle.

“We’re extremely excited to introduce Baselight 6.0 to the global colourist community,” said Martin Tlaskal, head of development at FilmLight. “We believe this release moves our technology forward significantly, and provides a platform that works in synchronicity with today’s colourist.

“By harnessing cutting-edge advances in machine learning Face Track will revolutionise this – allowing colourists to track faces, make corrections or enhancements and apply them across multiple scenes.”
