Can Communicate, the 3D production company renowned for its live sports expertise, has three 3D documentary series it’s currently keeping under wraps, produced under TouCan Productions in a joint venture with Touch Productions. “The demands on one of the projects are vast,” reveals Can’s creative director Duncan Humphreys (pictured). “We are going to film in the depths of the ocean as well as jumping out of helicopters and aeroplanes – those are worlds that don’t exist in 3D at the moment.”
The company is also pitching to create a series of 3D interstitials with several broadcasters expressing interest, claims Humphreys: “3D is really a business now – it’s a very exciting time. Even this time last year it felt very much a test of events and test productions, but the FIFA World Cup was a watershed; and the launch of Sky 3D has changed all that. If 3D is still around by the time of the next World Cup (2014) then it will be here for good. It will get easier to shoot, more innovative projects will get commissioned; and I think we’ll see high quality glasses-free screens quicker than anyone anticipated.”
Touch Productions clients include the BBC, Animal Planet, National Geographic and Discovery.
