HEVC Advance patent holders file suit against Vestel, Xiaomi

Claim infringement of patents essential to the HEVC/H.265 digital video coding standard

Certain patent owners in the HEVC Advance HEVC/H.265 Patent Pool have filed separate patent infringement proceedings in Germany against Vestel  and Xiaomi claiming infringement of patents essential to the HEVC/H.265 digital video coding standard.

According to the complaints filed in Düsseldorf, Vestel offers television and set-top-boxes in Germany which incorporate HEVC/H.265 technology, and Xiaomi offers mobile products in Germany which incorporate HEVC/H.265 technology.

Meanwhile, MAS Elektronik has become a licensee of the HEVC Advance patent following a ruling that granted injunctions to GE Video Compression, a licensor of HEVC Advance, Dolby International AB and Koninklijke Philips.

The regional court in Dusseldorf ruled that MAS infringed patents on products including set-top boxes, TVs and tablet. The court also found that the Advance licence terms and royalty rates offered to MAS were fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory.
