Apple’s iPhone 15 includes dedicated AV1 decoder

The dedicated decoder enables more efficient, high-quality video experiences for streaming services, said the tech giant

As part of its unveiling of the new iPhone 15, Apple has revealed the phone’s new A17 pro chip will support AV1 video via a “dedicated AV1 decoder”.

The dedicated decoder enables more efficient, high-quality video experiences for streaming services, said the tech giant.

Additionally, a new USB controller enables USB 3 speeds on iPhone for the first time, supporting higher transfer speeds and video output up to 4K at 60 fps HDR.

The Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia) released the first version of AV1 in 2018. The royalty-free codec claims to have a 30 per cent bit-rate efficiency edge over the likes of HEVC.
