Is Apple preparing to take a bite out of VR?

Tech giant has acquired NextVR

Apple has acquired virtual streaming company NextVR, which is thought to be part of the tech giant’s plan to move into VR hardware.

Terms of the deal have not been revealed. However in a statement Apple said, “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.”

NextVR specialises in filming live events to be experienced in virtual reality and already works with the likes of WWE, HBO, NBA, NFL, Fox Sports and Live Nation Entertainment.

Apple has been developing head-mounted AR and VR products over the last five years, and in a recent technology podcast, Apple tipster Jon Prosser revealed that the company’s AR glasses will include 5G.

The acquisition has led to speculation Apple could be planning to stream VR content via its Apple TV Plus service
