iPlayer debuts on PlayStation 5, enabling more viewers to watch UHD content

PS5 owners can add the BBC iPlayer app by going to the Media tab on the PS5 home screen

BBC iPlayer has extended its UHD reach with the launch of its app on PlayStation 5.

As long as viewers are watching on UHD-capable TVs, they can now access some of the broadcaster’s upcoming Christmas programmes in Ultra High Definition, including The Girl Before and A Very British Scandal as well as catch up on some of the BBC’s 2021 highlights, including drama Showtrial, thriller Vigil, and Sir David Attenborough’s natural history series The Mating Game.

PS5 owners can add the BBC iPlayer app by going to the Media tab on the PS5 home screen and selecting BBC iPlayer from the All Apps section. This will add BBC iPlayer to the apps library and make it available to use direct from the PlayStation home screen.

BBC iPlayer’s UHD content is already supported by a number of devices – including those from Amazon, LG, Panasonic, Roku, Sony, Netgem, Samsung, Virgin Media and Youview.

iPlayer has seen a record 2021, reporting 3.3 billion streams in the first half of the year. The BBC said second half of the year also began well, with the Euro 2020 final between England and Italy setting a new live viewing record on iPlayer, with 5.8 million streams.

The streaming service has also undergone a number of updates, including a new pared-back interface to make it easier for viewers to navigate around the UI, and more recently moving its navigation menu will move to the left hand side of the screen – making it easier to browse different categories like comedy, drama or sport.
