Amazon Prime Video ‘planning ad-supported tier’

The tech giant is said to have been holding early discussions over the past few weeks.

Amazon is reportedly planning to follow in Netflix and Disney Plus’s footsteps by launching an advertising-supported tier option for its Prime Video streaming service.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the tech giant has been holding early discussions over the past few weeks.

Amazon already offers FreeVee, which includes adverts alongside its programmes. In the United States, the company’s ad-supported streaming TV solutions reach an average monthly audience of more than 155 million viewers.

Asked about the reports, an Amazon spokesperson told TVBEurope’s sister title Broadcasting & Cable, “We don’t comment on rumours or speculation.”

In the first quarter of 2023, Amazon reported that revenue from all of its ad products rose 21 per cent to $9.5 billion from Q1 2022.
