The next disruptor? Instagram for TV begins testing

The social media app will be available on Amazon Fire TVs in the USA

Instagram has commenced testing Amazon Fire TV integration.

Following customer feedback, the social media company is trialling the service, which will enable users to watch creators’ content on their televisions. The test is designed to learn which features provide the best user experience on TV, said the company.

Once installed on a Fire TV, the app can be opened either directly or from the Settings bookmark in the Instagram mobile app. Up to five accounts can be added. Instagram Reels are grouped into channels matching users’ interests, such as music, sports content and trending moments.

The search facility allows users to easily find their favourite creators, browse profiles centred on Reels and explore their interests. The experience will evolve as Instagram learns from the test, said the company, with new features potentially including using a phone as a remote control.

Initially available in the US on Amazon Fire TV devices, Instagram intends to roll out the service across more countries and devices.

Instagram for TV will incorporate the same content standards as the app, with Reels generally following the PG-13 rating system, added the company.
