Germany’s DFL Supercup streams in 9:16 on TikTok

It was the first time the event had been broadcast in the 9:16 format

Last night’s Deutsche Football League Supercup between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund was streamed live on TikTok in a vertical format in order to make it compatible with smartphones.

It was the first time the event had been broadcast in the 9:16 format.

Both German sports network RanSport and Brazilian broadcaster OneFootball streamed the match, which the DFL produced as a separate stream with nine dedicated cameras and its own production team.

Other innovations employed for the match included video from a drone, a Star Cam that used player-tracking data to automatically follow individual players, an interactive feed that enabled fans to choose which stats were shown on their feeds, and a pilot programme in which select viewers followed the action with augmented reality glasses.

The DFL previously tested a mobile-first 9:16 aspect ratio in December 2019 during a match between VfL Wolfsburg and SV Werder Bremen.
