Akamai: Euro 2020 final streaming five-times higher than in 2016

Average peak traffic for all 51 tournament matches was 17.5 Tbps, which Akamai said is more than four times higher than the 4.1 Tbps average during the 2016 tournament

Akamai has revealed streaming of the Euro 2020 final between England and Italy peaked at 34.9 Tbps on its edge platform at the weekend.

The company provided streaming traffic for 30 rights-holding customers.

In a blog post, Akamai said the traffic peak during the final was the highest recorded during Euro 2020, and nearly five times greater than the 7.3 Tbps peak of the final between Portugal and France in 2016.

The second-most streamed match according Akamai was the match between Germany and England, reaching 33.9 Tbps; while the third-highest was the semi final between Italy and Spain at 32.6 Tbps.

Average peak traffic for all 51 tournament matches was 17.5 Tbps, which Akamai said is more than four times higher than the 4.1 Tbps average during the 2016 tournament. Akamai helped customers live stream nearly 580 million hours of tournament coverage in 2021, 3.5 times higher than the almost 164 million hours streamed in 2016.
