IBC2024: Meet the speaker – Kasia Jablonska

BBC Studios director of digital and on-demand for EMEA, Kasia Jablonska gives us an insight into her session of the growth of FAST in Europe, and why she's looking forward to discussing AI's role in personalisation and audience engagement

What will you be speaking about at IBC2024?

I will be sharing BBC Studios’ experience in building its FAST business in Europe, which involves balancing local editorial requirements with the creation of scalable, fast-to-market, products underpinned by automated data solutions. FAST is yet another route-to-market for BBC Studios, we already have a highly successful portfolio of linear channels and affiliate Players in the regions. FAST is the next step in building on this success. We strongly believe that our great library is a gift that keeps giving and it will attract audiences regardless of the platforms they choose to watch our content on.  I will be also discussing how the latest tech trends, (e.g AI) impact FAST, (e.g. improved search and recommendation functions).

What do you hope the audience takes away from your session?

I hope I will be able to share our learning of developing a successful FAST portfolio tailor-made for specific markets, tools required to deliver growth, technology to make your products scalable, and visualisation tools required to measure success. Hopefully, I will also be able to share the importance of building industry standards for FAST content and ads compliance, measuring FAST performance, and developing common currency for selling advertising on FAST.

What do you view as the key technologies defining the industry at the moment?

There are several key technologies I follow with interest as they are shaping the media industry at the moment:

  • AI and ML are revolutionising content creation, personalisation and recommendation systems. The amount of data they help to analyse is unbelievable. AI tools for localisation will be crucial for FAST growth.
  • The rollout of 5G is a game changer for our industry. With its low latency and high bandwith, 5G delivers completely new ways to enhance our content consumption: UHD live streaming, mobile broadcasting, seamless streaming on mobile devices. This, in turn, will heavily drive content consumption on the go.
  • The ability to gather and analyse large datasets is transforming our decision-making. We can gain insights into audience behaviour, optimise content strategies and enhance ad targeting. It gives content owners the opportunity to be more agile and respond fast to audiences and B2B clients’ demands.
Why is IBC an important date in the media tech calendar?
  • IBC is the industry benchmark for innovation, it’s a premier event where the latest innovations in media, technology and entertainment are availed.
  • It is a great networking hub for global experts across broadcast, content creation and technology. It’s an amazing opportunity to network, collaborate and exchange ideas with peers and leaders across the media landscape.
  • It offers high educational value. Its extensive programme of keynote speeches, panel discussions, and workshops led by industry experts and thought leaders create an amazing learning opportunity
  • It has a significant influence on media’s strategic direction. The conference sets the tone for what will be important in the industry, helping companies plan their strategies and product approaches.
What do you think will be the standout topics at IBC this year?

Personally, I hope it will be an intersection of AI and content creation. The rapid advancement in artificial intelligence is transforming the media landscape. The technology is not only enhancing the traditional content creation process but is also enabling entirely new forms of content. Highly important for me would be to join discussions on AI’s role in personalisation and audience engagement. As media companies strive to deliver more personalised experiences, AI-driven analytics and recommendation systems are becoming essential tools. How companies are leveraging AI to better understand their audiences, predict trends, and tailor content to individual preferences will be a key focus for me.

Kasia Jablonska will be on the panel at Setting the pace for FAST in Europe? Monetisation and motivations on September 14th at 12.30pm.
