NHK plans “world’s first” 8K channel

8K satellite channel due to launch at end of 2018

Japanese broadcaster NHK has announced plans to launch the “world’s first” 8K channel in December 2018.

NHK is showcasing its 8K format, which is calls Super Hi-Vision, at MIPCOM.

The broadcaster has been testing 8K broadcasts since August 2016 and says it is now preparing to launch an 8K satellite channel at the end of next year.

NHK has previously announced it intends to cover the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in South Korea in 8K. It then intends to embark on a tour of Europe with its 8K OB truck where it will shoot original content to create programming for the new 8K channel.
