Telefonica wins UEFA Champions League rights

DAZN was expected to bid for rights

Telefonica has acquired the Spanish broadcast rights to the UEFA Champions League for a total of €1.1 billion.

Palco 23 reported that the exclusive deal with UEFA covers three seasons starting in 2021 at a cost of around €360 million per season.

The deal follows Telefonica’s 2018 acquisition of a three-year package from Mediapro.

According to unnamed sources, UEFA was expecting sports streamer DAZN to make a bid and push up the value of the rights.

However, the coronavirus outbreak interrupted the bidding process and forced DAZN to enter “survive mode.”

Telefonica is expected to offer Champions League packages to DAZN Spain, Mitele Plus and other OTT providers.
